The SU-122, a medium-weight Soviet self-propelled artillery piece in the class of assault guns, was developed using the T-34 tank as its base. The first models entered service in 1943. Its purpose was to support and accompany tanks. This vehicle was among the first Soviet self-propelled artillery units to be mass-produced. A total of 638 were manufactured. Production ceased with the shift to producing the SU-85 tank destroyer, which was based on the SU-122.
