The Soviet STZ-5 tractor, equipped with the BM-13 'Katyusha' rocket launcher, was first introduced in 1941. Initially, experimental launchers were mounted on ZIS-6 vehicles, but later, various chassis, including American, British, and Canadian trucks provided through Lend-Lease, were used. On September 30, 1941, the Red Army adopted the BM-13 on the STZ-5 base. Highly mobile reactive artillery divisions were formed, operating alongside tanks and cavalry units.
