This two-player, low-to-intermediate complexity game simulates the Confederate invasion of the US southwest during the Civil War's New Mexico Campaign of 1862. While primarily strategic, it also has operational elements, with the Confederate player generally on the offensive and the Union player making counterattacks. The map's hexagons represent nine miles (14.6 kilometers), with units using a 'strength point' system (each point equals about 100 troops) and artillery units representing six guns. Each game turn represents half a month. Designed by Charles Diamond, the game features Confederate cavalry and Union infantry icons, reflecting the combined-arms nature of the forces. Capturable units like artillery, supply wagons, and depots are printed in both Union blue and Confederate gray. The turn sequence alternates between Confederate and Union phases, including march, combat, supply, attrition, and withdrawal phases.
