Surface modifiers, known as matting agents, are employed to alter the properties of paints, coatings, and inks by floating atop the surface. Primarily used to decrease surface gloss, they can also impart additional mechanical properties. Ceras based on polyethylene, polypropylene, carnauba, amide, and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) serve as matting additives.
