Germany developed several successful schwerer Panzerspahwagen ('heavy armored reconnaissance vehicles'). Among them was the Sd.Kfz.231 8-Rad ('eight-wheel'). Based on the six-wheeled Sd.Kfz.231, the Bussing-NAG 8x8 chassis enhanced cross-country mobility. It also boasted eight-wheel steering and dual driver controls, enabling rapid driving in either direction under attack (maximum road speed: 85km/h). Powered by a rear-mounted V8 engine, it required a four-man crew (commander, gunner, two drivers). Ordered in 1934, the 8.3-tonne Sd.Kfz.231 featured a hexagonal turret with a 2cm KwK 30 (or KwK 38) cannon and one MG34 machine gun. Though production ended in May 1942, it continued to serve throughout WWII.
