In 1944's autumn, following Army Group Centre's and Fifth Panzer Army's defeats, the Volksgrenadier divisions were established to conserve personnel and focus on defense. The MG42 machine-gun remained crucial, with two in each assault rifle-armed Sturm platoon's third squad.
