This 16-bit I/O expander, designed for 1.65-V to 5.5-V VCC operation, facilitates general-purpose remote I/O expansion for various microcontroller families via the I2C interface (serial clock, serial data). Two hardware pins (A0 and A1) enable programming and variation of the fixed I2C address, allowing up to four devices to share the same I2C bus. The TCA1116 comprises two 8-bit Configuration (input/output selection), Input Port, Output Port, and Polarity Inversion (active-high/active-low operation) registers. Upon power-on, I/Os are configured as inputs. The system master can enable I/Os as inputs or outputs by writing to the I/O configuration bits. Each input/output's data is stored in its respective register. The Input Port register's polarity can be inverted using the Polarity Inversion register, and all registers can be read by the system master.
